Student Travel Awards and Scholarships

Conference travel AWARD

ScSB will award up to four student travel grants of up to 1000 EUR for participation in our annual conference in Hafjell, 15-17th March 2017.

Please send a motivation letter to Ólafur Sigurjónsson ( before 15th January if you want to apply for this travel grant. The ScSB board will then decide who shall receive the travel grants and inform the recipients in early February. The grantees are required to write a small report after the conference, together with copies of their travel bills. Only documented cost will be reimbursed.

This grant is only eligible for PhD and master student with affiliation to an institution / university in a member country (Norway, Sweden, Latvia, Denmark, Iceland and Finland). A copy of the students submitted abstract to the annual conference would be beneficial to your application.

Exchange scholarship

Exchange scholarships are awarded to researchers with the member state of the ScSB (Nordic countries and the Baltic states) in the fields of Biomaterials to be used for shorter research stays within member countries.

You may apply for short research visits in another country within a member state, for any amount up to a maximum of 20 000 SEK. The board will review the applications and recommend an order of priority. There is no formal deadline and the applications are reviewed continuously.

Scientific assessment criteria

  • The trip or the exchange visit shall be of importance for the individual's scientific development
  • The trip or exchange visit shall contribute to strengthening the individual’s international research network
  • The trip or exchange visit shall not be naturally part of the individual's regular activities or included in the individual’s previous financial plans

The application

The application letter should detail the purpose of travel and include a description of the proposed project to be undertaken during the exchange visit at the institution abroad. Please describe the expected outcomes of the visit and in what way they are intended to be achieved.

In addition to the letter, the application should include:
  • Travel budget (including transportation and accomodation costs, attach quotes/estimates)
  • A brief CV of the candidate
  • Recommendation letter from the candidates supervisor
  • Letter of invitation from the host institution


Upon completion of the exchange scholarship, a travel report should be submitted to the President of the Society within one month of the end of the visit.

If money has been paid out for travel grants and was not used for the intended purpose or destination, the amount must be repaid in full.
